Overview

The Assistant Swim Team Coach plays a key role in supporting the YMCA’s competitive swim program. This position involves working with swimmers of all skill levels, helping to lead practices, assisting at swim meets, and contributing to a positive and inclusive team culture. Responsibilities include implementing training plans, ensuring swimmer safety, and supporting individual athlete development in alignment with YMCA values and program goals. The role provides support to the swim team program by assisting in coaching duties, ensuring a safe and positive environment, and promoting swimmer development. This role involves helping to plan and execute training sessions, offering technical instruction, and supporting swimmers during practices and competitions. The Assistant Coach works closely with the Head Coach to enhance team performance and foster a culture of sportsmanship and personal growth. 

Practices are held weekly Monday-Friday 8:00am-10:00am for the duration of the season; must be available for evening and weekend meets as required. 

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and leading structured swim practices that focus on technique, endurance, and overall development. 
  • Provide instruction on stroke mechanics, starts, turns, and race strategies. 
  • Support the Head Coach in overseeing swim meets, including warm-ups, race preparation, and feedback for swimmers. 
  • Foster a team environment that promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth. 
  • Ensure all swimmers and coaching staff follow YMCA policies and safety procedures. 
  • Communicate effectively with swimmers, parents, and staff regarding schedules, expectations, and progress. 
  • Help track swimmer progress and provide constructive feedback. 
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as meet entries, team events, and equipment management. 
  • Maintain current certifications and uphold YMCA and USA Swimming safety standards. 
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with Head Coach and Aquatics Director as needed.

Qualifications

  • Previous competitive swimming experience required; prior coaching experience preferred. 
  • Ability to work unsupervised 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Head Coach and other staff. 
  • Understanding of YMCA standards for the program. 
  • Completion of YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Harassment Trainings upon hire and annually thereafter. 
  • Maintain First Aid, CPR Certifications 
  • Must hold and maintain Lifeguarding Certification.  
  • Must complete YMCA principles of Competitive Swimming.  
  • Must complete Red Cross Safety for Swim Coaches within the first 30 days of employment. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds associated with demonstrating and moving training equipment. 
  • Ability to adequately provide instruction and supervision for the designated program. 
  • Above average sport specific skills. 
  • Neat and clean appearance.

Posted Salary Range

USD $15.00 - USD $17.00 /Hr.
